The Acer R 15 Convertible is difficult to review because it doesn't fit a defined niche. It's not as small as a super-portable like the HP Spectre X360. Nor is it a gaming or multimedia development machine, despite having an nVidia discrete graphics card. Generally, this is a "send with your daughter or son to college" or a "purchase for work, if you want larger screen/keyboard real estate" computer. There are countless computers in that category. Some have better gaming performance. Some have more features. Some are more portable. Why would you buy this one? I'll go into more detail on the specifics, but it's clear that Acer's primary response would be: for the screen. At the end of the day, this is a windows-based touchscreen with a computer built around it.

***THE SCREEN***
We might as well begin with the Acer R 15's best feature: its screen. The 1920x1080 touchsreen is absolutely gorgeous, with deep, vibrant colors, a crisp image, and outstanding... Read more

I'm very happy with this purchase.

I spent a bit of time looking around for a decent laptop I could use to install Linux (Ubuntu Gnome 17.04). I've heard some people having issues with these convertible laptops, but I did manage to see that there were a couple posts in the past about people who were asking about how to enable the wifi connection on this particular laptop. This told me that it was probable that I'd be able to get it working without much of a fight, plus I had very good luck in the past installing Linux on the Aspire line of laptops.

While the process of getting Linux to install was slightly tricky, you have to manipulate some bios settings. I was able to install it without too much of an issue. Happily the laptop works extremely well and actually performs better than I had expected.

The only thing that didn't seem to function after installing Linux was the finger print reader. It's a matter of time before this is fixed and honestly... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Three months in: Five Stars, September 15, 2017

This review is from: Acer Aspire R 15 Convertible Laptop, 7th Gen Intel Core i7, GeForce 940MX, 15.6" Full HD Touch, 12GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, R5-571TG-7229 (Personal Computers)
My last two laptops were Lenovo and Toshiba, but high-end models, and the build quality is far better on this Acer. The Lenovo's touchpad was terrible and one of the screen's hinges came unglued, two of the keys quit working on the Toshiba's keyboard, it had a habit of turning off so hard that an internal reset button was needed to power it back up. (After three great Thinkpads in a row, my last Lenovo was a huge disappointment.)

This Acer, on the other hand, has been great. No surprises anywhere, it just works. And it is surprisingly stiff for such a light, slim laptop. My last Toshiba was a similar 15" convertible, and it practically wilts in your hand when you pick it up. This one is solid though, which makes me optimistic about how long it will hold up.

The only issue is that the num-lock setting turns off every time it resumes from sleep. But it's hard to say whether that's a Windows bug or an Acer bug.
